Changing Careers with Ticket to Work

In recent years, millions of Americans have left their jobs or pivoted into new careers. Younger workers between the ages of 18 and 29 have shown a particularly strong interest in switching industries, with over 60% making a change to pursue something new. But this trend isn’t limited to younger adults—nearly half of workers over 30 also made career shifts, showing that it’s never too late to try something different.

Even those over age 45 have seen success when making a career change. A large majority—more than 80%—found their transitions to be successful, and nearly 9 out of 10 were satisfied with their decision. If you’re receiving disability benefits and thinking about trying something new in your professional life, you're not alone—and there's help available.

So how can you take the leap and join the growing number of people advancing or changing their careers? The Ticket to Work Program may be your first step forward.

We’re Here to Help

The Ticket to Work Program, offered by the Social Security Administration, is a free and voluntary program that empowers individuals with disabilities to explore meaningful employment. If you're between the ages of 18 and 64 and currently receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may be eligible to participate.

Through the program, you can connect with a network of Employment Networks (ENs) and other service providers who specialize in offering career counseling, job placement support, benefits counseling, and more. These professionals work with you to build a customized plan that fits your goals—whether you’re exploring a new career, returning to work, or seeking to advance in your current field.

Your employment team can also help guide you through the process of shifting into a different career. From identifying transferable skills to navigating interviews and training opportunities, they’re here to support your transition every step of the way.

Ready to Work?

Whether you’re thinking about reentering the workforce after time away, looking to switch industries, or aiming for a promotion in your current job, the Ticket to Work Program offers tools and support to meet you where you are.

If you’re at the beginning of your journey, service providers can help you clarify your goals, explore your strengths, and assess your readiness for work. If you’re actively searching for employment, they can assist with résumé building, application strategies, and mock interviews. And if you’re already working, you’ll find resources designed to help you maintain your benefits while increasing your earnings and building a path to long-term financial independence.

No matter your current stage—whether you’re exploring ideas or already moving forward—Ticket to Work is designed to grow with you.
