The Social Security Ticket to Work program is a free and voluntary initiative designed to help disability beneficiaries safely transition back into the workforce. It provides career counseling, job placement, and training services while protecting your monthly cash benefits and healthcare benefits. You can assign your ticket to an approved Employment Network to explore job opportunities without the immediate risk of losing your safety net.

How Does the Ticket to Work Program Function?

The program functions by assigning your Ticket to Work to an Employment Network to access free career services tailored to your goals. We help you build a resume, prepare for interviews, and find jobs.

During this process, the Social Security Administration protects your benefits while you test your ability to work.

If you are between the ages of 18 and 64 and receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you are likely eligible to participate. Moving back into the workforce can bring mixed feelings. You might want the independence of a steady paycheck, but you might also worry about losing the benefits you rely on.

We serve as an authorized Employment Network to guide you through this journey. You can assign your "ticket" to us, which simply means you have selected us as your service provider. From there, we work together to create a personalized plan to help you reach your occupational goals at a pace that fits your unique health situation.

What Are the Financial and Medical Benefit Protections?

The program protects your financial and medical benefits through specific work incentives like the Trial Work Period. This allows you to earn unlimited income for nine months while keeping your full disability check. Your Medicare or Medicaid coverage also continues uninterrupted while you participate in the program.

These overlapping protections give you security for years, ensuring you are never left without a safety net during your transition. Here is a closer look at the safeguards the program offers:

  • Trial Work Period: You have up to nine months to try working without any risk to your SSDI benefits. During these months, you can earn as much as you want and still receive your full cash benefit. These months do not have to be consecutive.
  • Extended Period of Eligibility: After your Trial Work Period ends, you enter a 36-month phase. During this time, your benefits can restart automatically for any month when your earnings drop below the federal limit, which is known as Substantial Gainful Activity.
  • Medical Review Protection: As long as you are participating in the program and making timely progress toward your employment goals, the Social Security Administration may not conduct medical Continuing Disability Reviews.
  • Healthcare Continuation: You can keep your Medicare coverage for over seven years (93 months) after your Trial Work Period ends, even if your cash benefits stop due to your work income.

How Can We Support Your Return to Work?

We support your return to work by serving as your dedicated Employment Network. We offer free career counseling, help you identify jobs that accommodate your physical or mental needs, and guide you through reporting your income to the Social Security Administration so your benefits remain secure.

We believe in focusing on positive opportunities for your future. The rules around your disability benefits are complex, and keeping track of earning limits and reporting requirements can feel stressful.

We help you plan your career path and understand exactly how to report your income. Our team provides the resources you need to build new skills, stand out in a competitive job market, and move toward financial independence without risking your current stability.
