Understanding Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) of SSDI Benefits
Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) allows individuals whose Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits have ceased due to excess earnings to request reinstatement without a new application, provided they become disabled again within five years.
Who is Eligible for EXR?
SSDI or SSI beneficiaries who match the following requirements are eligible for Expedited Reinstatement.
- Stopped receiving benefits because of earnings from work.
- Are unable to work or perform substantial gainful activity.
- Are disabled because of an impairment(s) that is the same as or related to the impairment(s) that allowed them to get benefits earlier.
- Made the request within 5 years from the month their benefits ended.
How do I Initiate the EXR Process?
To begin the EXR process, you should contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to request reinstatement. Our team at Disability Services of America can assist you in this process, guiding you through the steps and clarifying your rights to ensure your SSDI application is submitted accurately.
What interim benefits are available during the EXR process?
Provisional benefits can be paid when you request EXR. It will include cash payments and Medicare/Medicaid coverage. They usually do not have to be paid back if they deny your request. Provisional payments are paid for up to six months, but will end sooner if you:
- Are notified of SSA’s EXR decision.
- Engage in SGA.
- Reach full retirement age.
