The Social Security Administration (SSA) periodically reviews disability cases to determine whether beneficiaries still qualify for benefits. These reviews generally fall into two categories: work reviews and medical reviews.

A work review focuses on your earnings and work activity to determine whether you remain eligible for disability benefits. A medical Continuing Disability Review (CDR) evaluates whether your medical condition still meets Social Security’s definition of disability. If SSA determines that you no longer meet the medical requirements, your benefits may be discontinued.

In some situations, beneficiaries are protected from a medical CDR that is triggered solely by their work activity. This protection may apply if you:

  • Have received disability benefits for at least 24 months, or
  • Are actively participating in the Ticket to Work program.

If a beneficiary qualifies for protection from a medical CDR based on work activity, he or she will still undergo a regularly scheduled medical CDR unless they are “using" their ticket under the Ticket to Work program
